Minty Harbin born 1833 during slavery in Choctaw County, Alabama, is the earliest documented  ancestors of our Harbin family. Minty may have been a slave of Wiley Harbin a merchant from  South Carolina, who migrated with his family from Georgia to the Toxey Area in Choctaw County,  Alabama and Mobile County, Alabama, around 1830’s. It’s believed that she was a mulatto female  and she was married to George Harbin (information currently unknown).

By 1868 Minty had six known children Richard, Frank, Dollie, Dora (recently identified as her  child and her information hasn’t been added, George and Minnie (Minty) Harbin. She was listed in the 1880 United States Federal Census in Yantley, Choctaw County, Alabama as window  and sole provider of three children. Minty married George Harbin but his birth and death  information is currently unknown.

The Harris family earliest ancestor is Isaac Harris born in the Carolinas during 1800’s. His  family were slaves of James Joyner Smith Plantation in the Carolinas. The  Isaac family were sold  to a Harris planter in Choctaw County, Alabama. The descendants of Harbin‘s (Myra) and Harris  (Dock) united in marriage and they had nine children.

The Carolina planters moved to Alabama State to exploit land and labor hoping to extract riches  from cotton cultivation in the newly opened central region of Alabama which included part of  the "black belt"; an expanse of very rich soil that yielded large harvest and high-quality  cotton crops which made the region attractive to the Carolina's tobacco planters and farmers.
